More About Layers: A Retrospective

My exhibition, Layers: A Retrospective tells my life story through my work beginning in 1978 until the present; literally, because I finished my last piece two weeks ago.

My thoughts about this exhibition was that my work was a way of sharing how I have approached my life through my art with the viewer. I have always been in love with materials including fabric, rope, text from books, stones, flower petals, leaves, photographs, found objects, etc. I don’t believe I am done exploring new materials. I have also enjoyed using different ways of getting pigment in my work in addition to traditional ways such as paint, oil sticks, and pencils. They include squeezing the pigment from flower petals, dirt, coffee, tea bags and even my own blood.

As far as the subject matter is concerned, my mind has always been open to whatever I feel is important enough for me to want to share. They have included my interest in other cultures, the environment, life cycles, family stories, history, travel, our bodies, birth, and death. Some of my work explores my visualization of the body in nature and nature in the body. This series includes fragments of poems by Mary Oliver incorporated with paint, fabric, stitching, and burning. Her work has had a big influence on my own work and my approach to life.

I am hoping that each and every viewer no matter what their age, religion, sexuality preferences, etc. finds a way to connect with the work. My work does not have a fixed meaning; may each viewer find a connection through their own life story.

More About Beatrice

I am interested in the cycles of life and nature in relation to the passage of time and memory.

I am drawn to a palette of colors and materials that reflects the natural world: earth tones, rocks, flower petals, stains from tea, blood, coffee, flowers, etc. In some works I use cheese cloth, lace, sheer fabric, etc., which are placed over the image and act as a metaphor for protecting what I see as fragile in our world. 

My hope is that  the viewer will find a common bond between my work and themselves.
