More About Piece x Peace

Dear Greensboro,

As Black and Indigenous People of Color, it can be hard to navigate through who we are, who we want to be, and who the world tells us to be. While dealing with that, we don’t always realize how hard it is to find space to cope. We either feel we don’t have time to, or we were told it’s just part of life- part of growing up.

Well, no matter how much we grow, we still deserve the time and space to be human. We deserve a space to tell the truths of our experience. We deserve a space to find others who want to understand where we are coming from. Whether you find solace in observing artwork, or confiding in people from your community, take this space for yourself. Take this space to heal. You deserve to exhale.

May you be heard. May you be loved,

BIPOC-Greensboro

Curatorial Statement by Amiah Jones

The History of Kapwa

ᜃᜉ᜔ᜏ

Kapwa is an age-old moral framework originating from the Philippines. Filipino social-psychologist, Vergilio Enriquez, defined it as the recognition of a shared identity, an inner self, shared with others. This bridge between collectivist and individualist culture gives us the room to reflect. Should we build these bits of shared humanity into a path towards peace? Or should we proudly shatter on our own, piece by piece?
