The tanka is a collaborative poem that was originally exchanged by lovers in Japan. The project hopes to explore love in all its forms, stages, complications, and simplicities. Some of the questions you might consider exploring are: What is intimacy? How is it formed? When is it broken? How is it rebuilt?
The poem begins with partner one writing the first stanza as a Haiku (5-7-5) and the second partner writes the second stanza as a two line response. Each of these two lines are seven syllables (7-7). The couples won’t know each other’s whole poem until the reading.
