February 5th, 8pm

This will be an open rehearshal of original music for an album I hope to record this year. It’s basically modern jazz music, with a lot going on harmonically and rhythmically. My touchstones for writing are Ornette Coleman and Wayne Shorter

James Gilmore is a guitarist, composer and improvisor. He leads the James Gilmore FreeTet, which has featured Vattel Cherry, Laurent Estoppey, David Menestres (Polyorchard), Shawn Galvin, Joe Westerlund (Megafaun), Casey Toll (Mt. Moriah), Daniel Hall (The Old Ceremony) and Tatsuya Nakatani, as well as a jazz trio with Aaron Gross and Jon Curry (ZooCru, Ninth Wonder). He has performed with Eugene Chadbourne, Jeb Bishop, and many others. James is a member of the label and collective Out and Gone Music which released his ‘Bag of Tricks vol. 1’ in October 2017. His compositions have been performed by the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and he was co-organizer of the Varipop Music Festival in Durham in 2016. He runs a yearly Free Improvised Music series in the Triangle region of North Carolina.

GPS Band Practice

BAND PRACTICE invites local bands to use the GPS as a practice space. The public is invited to hear these bands work out their material. Keep in mind, these bands are not performing for you - but using the space to work out their sets and write new songs. This creates a unique opportunity to get insight into the musician's process.
